Billie Holiday was a talented and soulful singer with an impressive career. More importantly, however, she was an important voice in American culture. As a child she faced struggles and hardships. It was her turbulent youth, however, that allowed her to create music that spoke to those who faced their own challenges.
Holiday began her singing career in various Harlem nightclubs. It was here that she caught the attention of producer John Hammond. He was blown away by her voice and waisted no time signing her to a recording contract with Brunswick in 1935. Through the 1930s and 1940s, Her music became a staple in the popular Jazz scene.
The true turning point in her career came with the 1939 release of the song Strange “Fruit.” While she was known for her jazz performances, it was this important song that took her career to the next level. The song was a powerful statement about racial injustice, and it touched the soul of so many people in America.
Her career was at it’s peak through the 1940s. However, 1947 brought her personal and legal struggles as issues with personal relationships and substance abuse took their tool. However, these struggles fueled her art inspiring an evolved blues sound and a number of sold out shows in the late ’40s and ’50s. Billie Holiday, truly was a great American voice.
