Why “Some Like it Hot” is a 1950s Classic

Some Like it Hot is a classic 1959 film that perfectly blends humor and excitement. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon lead the cast as two men on the run from the mob. Marilyn Monroe, however, steals every scene. What more would you expect from everyone’s favorite blonde bombshell. It is actually worth noting that this was one of the early films to give Monroe top billing on the movie poster.

What really makes this film great, however, is not one actor but the great ensemble and perfectly paced story. The trailer narrates “Not since Scarface, so much action…Not since The Marx Brothers, so much comedy…” While this may have been a bit of hyperbole, it somehow captures what makes this film great. The almost Hitchcock-esque cat and mouse story of escape from mobsters grips the attention of the audience. At the same time, absurd humor abounds.

As Lemmon and Curtis don disguises to hide out amongst an all-girl band, things get out of control. The two men, under the assumed identities of Daphne and Josephine, have to avoid the mob while not blowing their cover around the breathtaking “Sugar” played by Monroe. Some Like it Hot takes elements of slapstick, romantic comedy, and suspense to create a one-of-a-kind film that could only have come from the 1950s.
