The 1950s brought us an impressive collection of classic children’s books. Some of these have gone on to become hit movies that some might not even remember first came to life on paper. Others remain an important part of growth and learning for children around the world. These are some of our favorite children’s books from the 1950s.
The Cat in The Hat
We can’t talk about classic children’s books without talking about The Cat in the Hat. Not only is this famous Dr. Seuss book a classic, but the character is forever linked with children’s literature with his image used for childhood literacy efforts around the world.
The Hundred and One Dalmations
Originally appearing in serialized form in Woman’s Day, this 1956 novel was, of course, the inspiration for the well-known Disney film.
The Lion, The, Witch, and the Wardrobe
Published in 1950, this book is still the most celebrated work of C.S Luis. It was, however, only the start of his 7-book “Chronicles of Narnia” series. The unique approach to storytelling and exciting fantasy elements make this classic widely loved to this day.
Charlotte’s Web
Charlotte’s Web is a story that has been told on screen in multiple film incarnations. It all started with the 1952 book by E.B White. This classic’s themes of friendship and growth are why it has remained on the library shelves and in the hearts of many readers.
