Gunsmoke was an American Western series that debuted in 1955. While it thrilled audiences in the 1950s, even more impressive is how it impacted entertainment for decades.

The 1950s were considered the Golden age of Television as more and more families gathered in front of their tv set to explore exciting worlds of entertainment. Gunsmoke was certainly appointment TV for many in the 50s. Its impact, however, went well beyond this decade.

The show lasted for an amazing 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975. Not only did it set a record for the longest-running drama series, but it heavily influenced others that would come later. While the series was a Western, it actually had a lot more to it than others in the genre.

A Show to Remember

While many Westerns relied on gun-slinging action, Gunsmoke told stories with a little more heart. James Arness was the perfect hero as Marshal Matt Dillon, but it was the ensemble cast that truly made it great. Doc Stone, Miss Kitty, and a host of others made Dodge City, Kansas feel like home to many TV viewers.

The rich characterization and blending of heart, humor, and action no doubt influenced generations of TV and film. What was your favorite thing about Gunsmoke? Let us know in the comments.
