Do You Remember Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest?

Alfred Hitchcock was a mastermind of suspense and “North By Northwest” is widely considered to be one of his best films. While it featured many of the themes and styles commonly associated with the director, it really brought something new to the table.

Beyond the classic Hitchcock suspense, the film included thrilling action and adventure. Furthermore, Cary Grant’s performance as Roger Thornhill brought the story to life in a unique fashion.

Interestingly enough, Hitchcock’s long-time collaborator, James Stewart expected to play the lead role not knowing that the director wanted Grant instead. Check out the behind-the-scenes casting story and other trivia here.

Cary Grant was actually reluctant to take the role initially, fortunately, he reconsidered. The Hollywood star, did, however, have his doubts about the film. He actually told Hitchcock that it was a “terrible script” and he famously expected the movie to fail.

Of course, we know now that “North By Northwest” did not fail. It became an instant hit and is still considered a classic. Much of what made it great is the unique approach to film which changed the industry forever.

The colorful backgrounds, secret agents, and characterizations of both heroes and villains became the prototype for James Bond films and inspired generations of filmmakers to create stories of adventure and suspense.
