1940s Firsts that Changed America

Not too long ago, we shared an article about some amazing ’50s firsts that changed American culture. Now we want to share some more fascinating first with you, this time from the 1940s. Here are some of our favorite things that came out of this important decade.

  • Mount Rushmore was completed – June 26, 1941 was the official date of completion for this American landmark. It is rumored, however, that, while it is “complete,” the carvings were originally intended to go to the waist.
  • The First Jeeps hit the road and off-road – In 1940, the first Jeep was introduced for military use during wartime. Five years later, the first civilian model made it to market.
  • The First Ballpoint Pens Were Sold – Sure, it’s not quite Mount Rushmore, but can you imagine a time before ballpoint pens? Prior to April 25, 1944, you couldn’t find them in the store.
  • The first microwave oven was invented – Although not the common household appliances they are today, microwave ovens first hit the scene in 1947.
  • Polaroid Cameras invented – Sure, now most of us are used to pulling a phone out of our pocket and taking pictures, but the 1947 invention of the instant camera was a game-changer.
